FAQs

THREE SHADES OF GOLD

Yellow Gold
The natural colour of gold is by far the most popular shade used in jewellery making. Yellow gold is usually alloyed with copper and silver, to strengthen it and give the jewellery longevity. The shade of the gold depends on its gold content and 18 carat gold generally has a richer yellow colour than 9 carat.

White Gold
White gold is simply yellow gold mixed with different alloys to give it its colour. Usually created by adding palladium, silver and copper, the colour is not white like platinum but more of a light grey steel colour. These days, jewellers often plate white gold with rhodium (a member of the platinum family) to enhance its colour. We can do this for you, but we’ll ask you first, as rhodium plating wears off and needs re-plating.

Rose Gold
Also known as red gold and pink gold, this shade became popular in Russia at the beginning of the Nineteenth Century and is often referred to as Russian Gold. Made by adding copper to yellow gold, the higher the copper content, the stronger the red in the colour and the shade can vary from carat to carat. 9 carat is usually much pinker than the 18 carat Gold.

ROSE GOLD

Is thin gold plating over copper or another alloy. Industry standard Vermil tends to be 2.5 microns of gold plating.
Lylie's used 5 microns of dipped salvaged sold over salvaged sterling silver.

GOLD CARATS

Pure Gold is very soft which makes it unsuitable for most jewellery. To make it stronger, it is mixed with other metals, such as silver, copper, zinc and palladium. This is called alloying. The Gold you see in jewellery is actually Gold alloy. While Yellow Gold is still probably the most popular colour of Gold, by mixing Gold with other alloys, we can create White Gold and Rose Gold.

The carat (ct) tells you how many parts of Gold and how many parts of other metal are in the Gold alloy. Don't confuse this with the carat weight of diamonds and gemstones. In the United States carat is spelt karat (kt).

More on gold carat here.

24 carat (fineness 999) or 99.9% Gold
22 carat (fineness 916) or 91.6% Gold
18 carat (fineness 750) or 75% Gold
14 carat (fineness 585) or 58.5% Gold
9 carat (fineness 375) or 37.5% Gold

WHAT IS GOLD DIPPING?

Also known as 'Plating' or 'Vermeil', Yellow Gold and Rose Gold dipping is a great option, but it does wear away over time to reveal the silver below. Please email servicing@lylies.com referencing your Name, Address, Order Number and the design you would like to have re-plated.

There is a small re-plating charge (around £30). Once payment is made, we will get your piece back to you as soon as possible. To avoid continually re-plating, 9ct Gold is the best option.

GOLD PLATED

Is thin gold plating over copper or another alloy.

GOLD VERMIL

Industry standard Vermil tends to be 2.5 microns of gold plating.

GOLD DIPPED

Lylie's used 5 microns of dipped salvaged sold over salvaged sterling silver.

SOLID GOLD

Lylie's uses 9ct Gold for our stock products. Higher grades are available through the Customise button.

Advice on insuring my LYLIE jewellery?

For those wanting to insure their LYLIE Jewellery, the insurance company we use is called TH March, and we are delighted to recommend them. We have full control over the repair or replacement and carry out all of the work ourselves, giving peace of mind that your LYLIE fine jewellery is restored (or replaced) to our very exacting standard. Use our reference number: AL027T.

How do I clean my fine jewellery?

Buildup of dirt or oil will block the light interactions in your diamond and cause it to stop sparkling as much as it cou;d. Luckily, cleaning your jewellery is an easy process; just pop it into a mug of warm water mixed with a few drops of soap or mild dishwashing detergent. Let it sit for a few minutes (or even overnight), then gently scrub the stone and basket with a soft-bristled baby toothbrush, rinse, and pat dry. Emerald cleaning is different - no cleaning product should be used, only warm water - see instructions below.
If you would like a full workshop clean and polish, please Whatsapp us a picture via our contact page so we can advise and quote you.

What special care do emeralds & aquamarines require?

Emeralds and aquamarines are from the same gemstone family (beryl) and have a specific set of care instructions that should be followed carefully:

DOs
  • Wear your stone! Wearing your emerald allows it to absorb some of the natural oils from your skin which keeps it in good condition!
DONTs
  • They are sensitive to heat change. Never take your ring anywhere which would subject it to an extreme heat change, both hot or cold. For example, wearing into a sauna or putting it into a freezer.
  • Don’t wear your ring in a jacuzzi or swimming pool with chemicals that might be abrasive to your ring.
  • Do not use dishwasher soap when you clean your emerald as it will strip out the natural oil in your emerald. Best to stick to water.
  • Remove your ring when using any abrasive chemicals in cleaning products or beauty products.

Do you resize and remodel pieces that LYLIE Jewellery have not made?

We happily work with LYLIE and non-LYLIE pieces, to resize them or to give them a second life through our remodelling service. Please see our remodelling library or contact us to discuss a resizing.

What is the difference between lab-grown and recycled-antique diamonds?

A recycled diamond has had a former life, and we have repurposed it from dated vintage jewellery. Treating something already in circulation with respect by reusing it, is perhaps the most sustainable choice of all.
Lab grown diamonds are created by using cutting-edge technology that replicates the natural diamond growing process. A lab-grown diamond is a diamond - chemically and physically identical to a mined diamond.

Learn more on our Lab grown vs. recycled antique diamonds page.

GIFT RETURNS

If you are returning an item received from LYLIE as a gift, you can exchange it for another item of the same value or more, provided (1) it is unworn with the security tags still attached, and returned in their original packaging and (2) you pay any cost difference and any additional delivery costs which may be incurred as a result.

If you exchange a gift for an item of lower value, any resulting balance will be held by us and we will provide a gift card to that value.

JEWELLERY REPAIR

LYLIE will repair, at no charge, any breakage caused by manufacturing defect within 30 days of receipt of purchase. Repairs needed after 30 days, or deemed to be caused by misuse or general wear and tear, will incur a repair and postage charge.

GIFT CARDS

An alternative is to opt for a gift card. Your gift card can be delivered via email (with instructions on how to redeem it) or by post in our signature packaging, and can be spent on the website. Gift cards of varying amounts can be ordered here.
